Farali Recipes: Simple Vrat / Upvas Recipes You Can Actually Make (and Are Healthy)
Cooking for a fast doesn't have to mean the same three dishes on repeat. Here's a mix of recipes you can make from scratch and using Vyndo's ready-made bhakhri and khakhra.
Farali Khakhra Chaat
A light, almost raita-like dish, good for evening fasting hunger when you want something simple.
What you need: Vyndo Farali Khakhra, fresh curd, roasted cumin powder, sendha namak, coriander, roasted peanuts, coriander chutney.
How to make it: Crumble the khakhra into a bowl, breaking it into small, uneven pieces. Pour fresh whipped curd over the top, add coriander chutney, roasted cumin powder, sendha namak, roasted peanuts, and coriander leaves. Mix just before eating so the khakhra keeps some bite.
Sama Chawal Khichdi
A lighter alternative to sabudana khichdi, using barnyard millet instead.
What you need: Sama chawal (washed and soaked for 30 minutes), boiled potato, peanuts, cumin seeds, green chilli, curry leaves, sendha namak, ghee.
How to make it: Heat ghee, add cumin seeds and curry leaves, then chopped green chilli. Add boiled potato cubes and peanuts, cook briefly. Add the soaked and drained sama chawal along with a small amount of water, cover and cook until the grains soften, similar to cooking regular rice. Season with sendha namak and finish with coriander.
Farali Bhakhri with Peanut Chutney
A crunchy, flavour-packed way to eat bhakhri — the chutney does most of the work here.
What you need: Vyndo Farali Bhakhri, peanuts, coriander, coconut, green chilli, sendha namak, lemon, sugar, roasted jeera.
How to make it: Grind the peanuts, coriander, coconut, green chilli, sendha namak, a pinch of sugar, roasted jeera, and a squeeze of lemon together in a mixer into a coarse, spreadable chutney. Break the bhakhri into pieces, and either spread the chutney directly on top or serve it on the side for dipping. The roasted jeera and lemon keep the chutney light rather than heavy, and it works well alongside the bhakhri's crunch.
Crumbled Jeera Bhakhri (Sweet)
A quick sweet fix for a fast — crumbled bhakhri turned into a warm, jaggery-sweetened treat.
What you need: Vyndo Jeera Bhakhri, jaggery, ghee, chopped dry fruits (almonds or cashews), a pinch of cardamom powder, milk (optional).
How to make it: Crumble the bhakhri into small pieces in a bowl. Melt ghee and jaggery together in a pan on low heat until it forms a thin syrup, then pour it over the crumbled bhakhri and mix well so every piece gets coated. Add chopped dry fruits and a pinch of cardamom powder, and mix again. For a softer version, warm a little milk and pour it over just before eating, letting the bhakhri soften slightly like a quick sweet porridge.
